Oil On Whyte

A depth defenceman might be off the trading block; Nick Kypreos of Sportnet tweeted yesterday that the Oilers are rumoured to be closing in on a contract extension with Andy Sutton that would see the blueliner stay for one more year at a value of 1.75 mil. While paying a third pairing dman close to 2 million isn’t ideal, the Oilers cap situation will be no worse for wear. If this signing is indeed true, add me to the list of people who think it’s a decent move. Sutton brings all the physicality that Peckham does while being more dependable in his own end. Keep him on 3rd pairing minutes/PK duty and he’s a stop-gap signing, allowing for David Musil and Oscar Klefbom another year to develop.

As for Sutton perspective, he’s a slow, aging defender, so it’s understandable he might not want to test the free agent waters when he’s getting decent playing time in Edmonton. By no means however; should Tambellini think that his defense for next year is now set. Trade deadline and free agency needs to bring us upgrades on Cam Barker and Theo Peckham.

Taylor Hall shows off his speed and other Sunday Musings after the jump.
