I started writing this article before the trade happened today, and now it feels slightly more relevant… You can almost taste how badly they want that puck... Mandatory Credit: Andy Devlin / Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club It’s been a few days since Sutton was signed to an extension, and I still don’t know what to think. Sure he’s played well for the Oilers, and yes he’s saying all the right things about wanting to stay, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is a good presence in the locker room and a help for the kids. At the same time he is at best a bottom pairing d-man, and the Oilers have a plethora of those right now. Besides Sutton there is Corey Potter, Theo Peckham, Cam Barker, and if this was a good team, Jeff Petry. In my opinion that’s five guys that should be fighting over 2 spots on the roster, and one in the press box. Even if you think Petry is ready for top four play, that’s still four players for three spots, and we still need to bring in a legitimate top pairing player. So while I like Sutton, I worry that the Oilers plan on letting either Barker or Peckham go and leaving the other 7 as is. So what would I like to see happen?
